Server updates

Took much longer to load this am. As if a DNS error was forthcoming. I've noticed this on some very large sites. That get many hits every second. Like fox news CNN and such. Namely during an event or national crisis
{website not responding due to higher than normal visitors}
generally an response by the sites maintenance IT dept. That's what I've noticed so far.
& I would like to respectful request, other.additions options here as well.picture posting, video pisting (not just a link)?the option for a poster to edit their posts.

Sorry to everyone having a problem in the Personals / Friendfinder! I didn't realize it was throwing an error, nothing showed up in the logs so I didn't know until I saw several emails.

It's fixed now, but unfortunately any personal ad posted since around 2am is lost Sorry!!

@dale61, that's a much bigger problem. YouTube changed their policy without warning a few months ago, and require me to completely rewrite the system to embed their videos. But it's very complicated, their docs are impossible to read, and I honestly haven't able to figure it out!! It's definitely on my list of things to figure out, but the new server had to jump up in the priority list when the traffic on the sites increased so much this year; I was afraid the old one was going to burn up!!

That IS weird, and it's an encoding issue. But he posted it just a few minutes after I had changed the DNS records, so I don't know if he was on the old server or new one.

I'll have to keep an eye on things like that, and if it continues then I'll see if there's something I need to do to change the encoding on the new server. That's a good catch, though, so I really appreciate that!

Right now, though, the site is running on a faster server with more RAM and (a lot) more CPU. It's also on a faster and more secure operating system, updated PHP (with FastCGI), a faster database language, AND it's (finally) using HTTP/2 and Google's Pagespeed module. Statistically, every page should load at least 25% faster, but that's not including the hardware upgrades so it could be even faster than that.

I still have a little tweaking to do, but that'll probably have small impacts over the next month or two. The big job appears to be done

As of about 30 minutes ago, I changed all of the GoNC domains to point to the new server.

I've been using the new server all day with no issues, but of course it can be a lot different with high traffic! So bear with me if you see any bugs or glitches.

It can take days (even weeks) for every internet provider to see the new server, but the only thing anyone should notice is that you might not see the pictures for a classified ad or private message that's submitted on the old server. For now I'm manually copying pics from the old server to the new one every so often, though, so that should just be a short inconvenience.

If you see any other bugs or glitches, please reply here to let me know, or you can email me: [email protected]

Well, I tried to change the DNS to point the site to the new server, but after about 3 1/2 hours it's still not redirecting! Until it goes live I can't test to make sure there aren't any errors and I need to go to bed, so I changed the DNS back and will just have to try again tomorrow.

Now I'm pretty nervous that it's going to start redirecting to the new server while I'm asleep, though

So if you see anything weird this morning, then that's probably why. No data should be lost anywhere, but it's possible that you'll see weird text or colors, things in the wrong place, or maybe even not see posts at all! But don't worry, everything is safely backed up, it would just be an issue of the site being able to read it properly.

Major update!!!

I just completed the transfer of the database to the new server. This was huge... it's a whole new database language and format, so I'm suuuuper stressed about it! But (in theory) it should end up considerably faster and more secure.

For right now, though, it will be marginally slower. There's not much I can do about that, there's a 35ms delay from the old server connecting to the new one for each database query. And, there are going to be some configuration tweaks to do on the new server, but I have to let it run for at least 48 hours before I will know what all needs to be tweaked. But if all goes well then I hope to have the entire site moved to the new server this weekend, and then it should be much faster.

If you have any problems at all, please don't assume that I've seen it!! Just post about the problem here, or email me at [email protected]

I got a little behind schedule, but I've just completed the next major update. This is actually a variation on the update I did on Nov 22 but with a modified configuration, so I'm crossing my fingers that everything's OK this time.

If you see the site running slow, please post it here, or PM me, or email me: [email protected]

Singer must have took the gerbil that runs the wheel that powers the server. Can't imagine what she did with it.

three guesses and the first two don't count!

Hmm. This was a weird one... the update should have been faster, and I don't see any significant changes in Apache processes or volume. In fact, all of my stats improved after my first major update.

But for whatever reason, I do see that the server load was much higher today than it has been.

I've reversed that update, so hopefully it will be better now. Assuming so then I'll try to run the next update tomorrow (Monday) night.

It's faster now than it was earlier today, then it was so slow my iPad timed out trying to get GW to open.
